Some sense in the world

As is usually the case, I felt very melancholy watching the 2004 Athens Olympics come to a close. The Olympics is one of those events where you can’t quite isolate a specific reason for loving it so much, simply because there are too many reasons to identify. I adore the sport, the comradery, and the unity. Each time I watch another closing ceremony I vow to myself I’ll see the Olympics in person. It’s time to stop breaking those promises!

Protests against a possible Bush reelection? Sounds good to me! What goes through a man’s head when he sees hundreds of thousands protest the very man he is? Does it make him, even just for a moment, second guess himself?

I got a gmail account the other day. How google-riffic!

You’re either with us… or you’re a communist

This is probably old news to the blogging scene, but I was practically dying from laughter as I made my way through the following sites, and had to share it with those who haven’t experienced satire and criticism at its finest.

The first site is the “Official” Re-election site for President George W. Bush. On this wonderfully colorful site, you can browse through the president’s campaign calendar for various fundraising events (including Abortion Clinic Demolitions), learn about his movement to promote abstinence through self-inflicted tazer wounds to the genitals, and even educate yourself on the reopening of the Yellowstone Circumferential Snowmobile Expressway!

The second site is, quite simply, The White House! I strongly recommend checking out some of the grade school letters to the president under the Kids Only section. There’s also a tantalizing piece on Laura Bush’s new endeavour to block stem-cell research. Oh, and don’t forget to sign up for your Patriot ID!

In other “news,” I’ve declared this Friday afternoon my last day of freedom before my second year of law school starts. On a more positive note, though, I’ve learned that the various citation errors and silly grammatical mistakes I made on the law review write-on competition weren’t enough to knock me out of the running, and I will be joining the Seattle University Law Review in the fall!

Now I just need to get my car back…

More picture albums and a hat

Pictures of days three and four from the Seattle visit are now up, along with comments. Check them out, leave comments, and… stuff. I also updated the albums for days one and two with some extra pictures from Dennis and Pat. Check them out at the gallery. Be sure to check out Dennis’s pictures as well.

Adam and I made it out to the friendly confines today for a Cubs game. The game was sold out, so we had to scour the area for some tickets, and managed to get lucky. Things were going well until the 8th inning when… well, things took a turn for the worse and the Dodgers scored 5 runs. I love the Cubbies, but how many times have we seen this happen? Where’s the bullpen man? Well, at least I got a cool hat.

On a political note, have a look at this interesting timeline comparing John Kerry and George W. Bush. It’s obviously a pro-Kerry website, but they’re not making up any facts about our president.

No more terrorism after November 2nd!

Today Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge raised the terror threat level at various key financial sites on the East coast.

These terror warnings are really getting to me. The American public never gets specific instructions on how to deal with the raised warnings. As my fathers asks, “are we to dawn our gasmasks?” Aren’t these people really just covering their asses inciting fear?

During the news conference, Ridge told reporters:

We have told them that at this time there is no information that indicates a specific time for these attacks beyond the period leading up to our national elections

This is also pretty misleading. Arguably, we saw terrorism affect the outcome of national elections in Spain. But shouldn’t it be clear now that Al Qaeda is more concerned with destroying our way of life, which certainly goes beyond affecting elections in a country where they honestly couldn’t care less about who sits in the oval office?

Do we really want to re-elect this man?

Saw this over at John P. Hoke’s blog.

Apparently officials from Bush’s re-election campaign openly questioned a photographer from the Arizona Daily Star about her race because she was assigned to take pictures of vice president Dick Cheney at a re-election rally.

It’s amazing what the politics of fear have done to this country in the past 3 years.
