Haven’t made many substantive updates here for a while. Here are some random ramblings riddled with rigorous reasoning. Or not.
- The other day, I downloaded Security Essentials, Microsoft’s new free antivirus program. Surprisingly, I’m rather impressed with it; it actually detected a virus (!!) that AVG was missing. Needless to say, I’m now using it instead of AVG. There are a ton of really basic user interface enhancements it desperately needs (c’mon Microsoft, there should at least be a button to pause scans) but I guess there’s something about having the might of Microsoft behind an antivirus program that makes me feel more protected than I would with AVG. Plus, the price is right.
- I’m currently engrossed in The Informant by Kurt Eichenwald. Inherent bias aside, this is an absolutely riveting page turner, filled with so many plot twists and surprises that I frankly cannot believe it is non-fiction. I also really like Eichenwald’s writing; he’s not flashy or overly descriptive at all, and he’s very good at getting straight to the point. I highly recommend this book!
- I’m also reading the Harry Potter series. Every dark and boding tale of corporate greed needs its dose of fantasy for balance, right?
- Where did the summer go?
Cheerio!

Happy Independence Day!
By the way, I think it’s amusing that Intel’s own CPU identification tool can’t detect its new ultra-low voltage processors. Just a matter of time, I guess!

Just got back from a short trip to Chicago for the President’s Day/Valentine’s Day weekend (I try to coordinate my trips to Chicago with President Obama, when possible). So here are a couple blog-worthy items:

That last post I did about Random Cool Stuff turned out pretty well, so I’m continuing an already successful tradition!

It’s official, I’m going to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics! Hooray and huzzah! Of course, I’m going as a spectator. As soon as they make excessive geekiness an Olympic sport, I’ll be proud to represent the country. Anyway, I got tickets to see ice hockey and short track speed skating, and even though the Winter Olympics are more than a year away, I’m already ridiculously pumped. I’ve always wanted to attend the Olympics, and now that dream will be a reality! Man, going to the Olympics! SWEET!

In faster-than-usual fashion, pictures from my recent trip to the Dominican Republic are now available in the gallery. I took well over 400 pictures during this trip, although there are only around 150 or so uploaded, mostly because some of the pictures are redundant and, well, 400 is a lot!
Although you can certainly view all the pictures from the gallery on my blog, in a very small number of cases where the picture caption is particularly long, they may get cut off (due, I believe, to a small technical issue with Shadowbox JS). Also, due to another technical issue (maybe kPicasa Gallery?), videos don’t seem to be working through the gallery (there are only 4 or so, so not a substantial amount). If you want the full, unadulterated viewing experience–i.e., no captions ever clipped, and videos–you can view the album at my Picasa Web Albums page.

So, instead of playing with this new piece of consumer electronics and actually enjoying my last day in Chicago with the family, instead I’m fending off basement flooding. Oh, the benefits of living on a hill…

Oh for Pete’s sake…
As if we haven’t already seen enough about snow paralyzing poor ol’ Seattle, now we have this story making the Emerald City look even more helpless–if that’s even possible at this point.
Yes, we get it, CNN. Seattle can’t handle snow to save its life. Thanks for rubbing it in. Again. And with an included video no less!

I’ve blogged about this topic earlier, but some things deserve extra time in the sunshine. As some of you know, I’ve been batting around the idea of acquiring a new digital music player. While I’m very fond of my iRiver iFP-790, my recent fascination with Amazon mp3 downloads has shown me (reminded me?) that 256MB is not a particularly generous amount of storage these days. Still, I’m serious when I declare that my iFP-790 has served me very well, and it dawned on me the other day that as I’ve embarked on this search for the successor to my trusty digital music player in red, I’m basically looking for the exact same player, but with more storage space.
