I’ve survived two practice rounds of oral arguments thus far. This stuff is tough. Getting questioned in class and not knowing an answer is okay, because you’re not purporting to be an expert in whatever substatantive area the case you’re getting grilled on happens to touch upon. But when you’ve submitted briefs, and prepared arguments, suddenly not knowing how to respond to a particular hypothetical feels a lot more painful. “Your honor … the statute speaks for itself.”
I had my first callback interview today. No major disasters occurred, thankfully, although I poured a glass of water and didn’t end up drinking it at all during the first interview. Either they’ll recognize I was too engaged in conversation with them, or that I was only there to waste their water.
